This year is the 55th since The Good Design Award was established and 1,112 products have been awarded amongst 3,162 entries.
Good Design Award overview
The Good Design Award is hosted by Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization and it is the comprehensive design award. Since established in 1957, it has been awarding to good designs for life, industrials and the entire society. “G-mark” is well recognized as a sign of good designs for over half a century.
Luce overview
LUCE, Multi-purpose Seating, is developed in collaboration with the Italian industrial design firm, Giugiaro Design. The Luce uses the technologies created for the Leopard that provide a perfect fit with your body throughout all postural changes from sitting to standing. Its “smart relaxation” mechanism absorbs most of the impact to your body when you sit down and provides a relaxing softness under you, regardless of your height or weight. This chair is particularly suitable for active work scenarios where you are required to stand up frequently and are rarely seated for a long time. In addition to its use as an ergonomic multi-purpose office chair, it is also an attractive item for the home. With its distinctive forward-leaning shape, the Luce was the product of research into improved seat-cradle design undertaken by a collaboration of Okamura, experts in advanced seating design, and OKI, specialists in robot applied technology.

The Okamura Corporation will exhibit its new concept in seating, the Leopard, at the NeoCon World’s Trade Fair 2009 in Chicago, USA, starting from June 15th, 2009. The Leopard is the product of collaboration with the Tokyo-based Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd.
The driving concept behind its revolutionary “Seat Cradle Design” was to simulate the way a parent holds a child in their arms. This led Okamura Corporation to fuse their advanced seating technology with OKI’s robot leg technology using mechatronics engineering to produce the Leopard. This chair mimics the behavior of human muscles to follow every change in the sitter’s posture, providing a superior fit to the body from sitting to standing and maximum ergonomic comfort. As a chair, the Leopard has a versatility which lends itself to many contexts where the relaxation of the sitter’s body is important.
